Clean Energy Canada Report Debunks Myths About Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Canada

21 November 2023

The organization Clean Energy Canada (CEC) has analyzed the most popular EV models across Canada and compared their total cost of ownership (including initial cost, government rebates and energy costs) with that of equivalent gasoline-powered models. The findings are surprising: every car analyzed costs less than the equivalent gasoline version.

Yes, it's better for the environment.

On a global scale, it's a fact: even in regions where electricity grids are powered by fossil fuels, electric vehicles generate fewer lifecycle emissions than gasoline-powered vehicles. In fact, EVs pollute up to 89% less than gasoline-powered cars (in terms of GHG emissions), including emissions from mining, manufacturing and use.

Yes, their range is more than sufficient.

According to Clean Energy Canada, most Canadians drive less than 60 kilometres a day. Considering that the average range of recently sold vehicles already exceeds 450 kilometres, this is more than enough to cover most Canadians' daily journeys. Given that between 80% and 90% of their charging is done at home, EV drivers only need to use a public charging station in 10-20% of cases.

Yes, the batteries are reliable.

According to a recent study mentioned by CEC, only 1.5% of the vehicles observed required battery replacement, and most of these replacements took place under warranty. Tesla also reported that, after 321,000 kilometres of driving, the range of its vehicles decreased by only 12%. EV drivers can therefore be reassured about the reliability of new EV batteries.

Yes, it's more affordable.

According to CEC, wherever you live in Canada, EVs cost significantly less than their gasoline equivalents. The savings are most impressive in Québec: over a 10-year period, the vehicles studied by CEC cost 47% less on average than gasoline-powered vehicles. Thanks to government rebates, some EV models are already less expensive than gasoline-powered vehicles and generate savings right out of the dealership since their energy and maintenance costs are significantly lower.
