Here is a summary of the annual savings that an average Quebec motorist (who drives 20,000 km/year) could expect to achieve (with gasoline at $1.75/litre).

Are not included here the additional savings of maintenance and repairs due to the greater durability of the vehicle (absence of certain parts that may need to be replaced on a gasoline car, such as spark plugs, exhaust, belts, transmission oil, etc.

Also not included are any insurance savings offered by some companies.

Plug-in Hybrid Models

The plug-in hybrid car also offers significant savings. A significant portion of the kilometers traveled can be achieved without burning a drop of gasoline. In addition, when using its gasoline engine, it offers the benefits of conventional hybrid powertrain such as regenerative braking (which recharges the battery) and greater overall efficiency (reduced fuel consumption).

The maintenance of this type of vehicle is also less expensive. Oil changes are less frequent, as is brake maintenance.

For models that offer an electric range of more than 50 km, savings of about $1,935 can be expected annually, or about $160 per month (average value, excluding the BMW i3-REX which has more of a profile similar to a 100% electric one. ).
For models that offer 50 km and less of electric range, the annual economy is more variable, with an average saving around $1,210, or about $100 per month

Of course, the actual use will depend on each driver, depending on how they use the vehicle. The motivated driver could avoid using the gasoline engine as much as possible within the vehicle's electric range, as well as by limiting acceleration and optimizing regenerative braking.
